The book teaches a samadhi training system very similar to VRJ (vism. redefinition of jhana).
This goes to show samatha kung fu, as an aspect of first jhana,  is far less important than really understanding and seeing dukkha.

In other words,  it doesn't matter how perfect the samatha and how difficult you define your requirements of what constitutes first jhana, if your first jhana can't even overcome lust to a minimum degree and help you keep basic sila/morals.
