kathaṃ rūpī rūpāni passatīti — vimokkho? | What is the liberation described thus: possessed of materiality, he sees instances of materiality? |
idhekacco ajjhattaṃ paccattaṃ nīlanimittaṃ manasikaroti, nīlasaññaṃ paṭilabhati. | Here someone gives attention to the sign of blue-black internally in himself {e.g. his hair, PsA}. He obtains perception of blue-black. |
so taṃ nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ karoti, sūpadhāritaṃ upadhāreti, svāvatthitaṃ avatthāpeti. | He thoroughly apprehends, thoroughly bears in mind, thoroughly defines1, that sign. |
so taṃ nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ katvā sūpadhāritaṃ {supadhāritaṃ (ka.)} | Having thoroughly apprehended, thoroughly borne in mind, thoroughly defined, that sign, |
upadhāretvā svāvatthitaṃ avatthāpetvā bahiddhā nīlanimitte cittaṃ upasaṃharati, | he applies his consciousness to the sign of blue-black externally. |
nīlasaññaṃ paṭilabhati. | He obtains perception of blue-black. |
so taṃ nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ karoti, sūpadhāritaṃ upadhāreti, svāvatthitaṃ avatthāpeti. | He thoroughly apprehends, thoroughly bears in mind, thoroughly defines, that sign. |
so taṃ nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ katvā upadhāretvā svāvatthitaṃ avatthāpetvā āsevati bhāveti bahulīkaroti. | Having thoroughly apprehended, thoroughly borne in mind, thoroughly defined, that sign, he repeats, develops and makes much of it. |
tassa evaṃ hoti — “ajjhattañca bahiddhā ca ubhayamidaṃ rūpan”ti, | It appears to him thus: 4 This is materiality internally and externally and both'. |
rūpasaññī hoti. | Thus he is percipient of materiality. |
idhekacco ajjhattaṃ paccattaṃ pītanimittaṃ . | Here someone gives attention to the sign of yellow internally in himself. |

♦ kathaṃ ajjhattaṃ arūpasaññī bahiddhā rūpāni passatīti — vimokkho? | 19. What is the liberation described thus: Unpercipient of materiality internally, he sees instances of materiality externally? |
idhekacco ajjhattaṃ paccattaṃ nīlanimittaṃ na manasikaroti, | Here someone gives attention [39] to the sign of blue-black internally in himself. |
nīlasaññaṃ na paṭilabhati; | He does not obtain perception of blue-black. |
bahiddhā nīlanimitte cittaṃ upasaṃharati, | He applies his cognizance to the sign of blue-black externally. |
nīlasaññaṃ paṭilabhati. | He obtains perception of blue-black. |
so taṃ nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ karoti, sūpadhāritaṃ upadhāreti, svāvatthitaṃ avatthāpeti. | He thoroughly apprehends... |
so taṃ nimittaṃ suggahitaṃ katvā sūpadhāritaṃ upadhāretvā svāvatthitaṃ avatthāpetvā āsevati bhāveti bahulīkaroti. | Having thoroughly apprehended, ... makes much of it. |
tassa evaṃ hoti — “ajjhattaṃ arūpaṃ, bahiddhā rūpamidan”ti, | It appears to him thus: 'There is no materiality internally, this is materiality externally'. |
rūpasaññī hoti. | Thus he is percipient of an instance of materiality. |

rūpasaññī hoti. | Thus he is percipient of an instance of materiality. |
evaṃ ajjhattaṃ arūpasaññī bahiddhā rūpāni passatīti — vimokkho. | Such is the liberation described thus: Unpercipient of materiality inter nally, he sees instances of materiality externally. |

♦ kathaṃ “subha”nteva adhimutto hotīti — vimokkho? | 20. What is the liberation described thus: He is resolved upon only what is beautiful? |
idha bhikkhu mettāsahagatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati, tathā dutiyaṃ, tathā tatiyaṃ, tathā catutthaṃ. | Here a bhikkhu dwells intent upon one quarter with his will endued with lovingkindness, likewise the second quarter, likewise the third quarter, likewise the fourth quarter; |
iti uddhamadho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi sabbattatāya sabbāvantaṃ lokaṃ mettāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena {abyāpajjhena (syā. )} pharitvā viharati. | so above and below and around; he dwells intent on the entire world everywhere and equally with his will endued with lovingkindness, abundant, exalted, measureless, free from affliction. |
mettāya bhāvitattā sattā appaṭikūlā honti. | Because of the development of lovingkindness beings are unrepulsive. |
karuṇāsahagatena cetasā . | He dwells intent upon one quarter with his will endued with compassion |

idha bhikkhu sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā “ananto ākāso”ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati — ayaṃ ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho. | |

♦ katamo viññāṇañcāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho? | |
idha bhikkhu sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ samatikkamma “anantaṃ viññāṇan”ti viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati — ayaṃ viññāṇañcāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho. | |

♦ katamo ākiñcaññāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho? | |
idha bhikkhu sabbaso viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ samatikkamma “natthi kiñcī”ti ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati — ayaṃ ākiñcaññāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho . | |
(7. neither perception nor non perception attainment)
♦ katamo nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho? | |
idha bhikkhu sabbaso ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ samatikkamma nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati — ayaṃ nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho. | |
(8. Perception and feelings cessation attainment)
♦ katamo saññāvedayitanirodhasamāpatti vimokkho? | |
idha bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṃ samatikkamma saññāvedayitanirodhaṃ upasampajja viharati — ayaṃ saññāvedayitanirodhasamāpatti vimokkho. | |
