What is the liberation described thus: possessed of materiality, he sees instances of materiality?
idhekacco ajjhattaį¹ƒ paccattaį¹ƒ nÄ«lanimittaį¹ƒ manasikaroti, nÄ«lasaƱƱaį¹ƒ paį¹­ilabhati.
Here someone gives attention to the sign of blue-black internally in himself {e.g. his hair, PsA}. He obtains perception of blue-black.
so taį¹ƒ nimittaį¹ƒ suggahitaį¹ƒ karoti, sÅ«padhāritaį¹ƒ upadhāreti, svāvatthitaį¹ƒ avatthāpeti.
He thoroughly apprehends, thoroughly bears in mind, thoroughly defines1, that sign.
so taį¹ƒ nimittaį¹ƒ suggahitaį¹ƒ katvā sÅ«padhāritaį¹ƒ {supadhāritaį¹ƒ (ka.)}
Having thoroughly apprehended, thoroughly borne in mind, thoroughly defined, that sign,
upadhāretvā svāvatthitaį¹ƒ avatthāpetvā bahiddhā nÄ«lanimitte cittaį¹ƒ upasaį¹ƒharati,
he applies his consciousness to the sign of blue-black externally.
nÄ«lasaƱƱaį¹ƒ paį¹­ilabhati.
He obtains perception of blue-black.
so taį¹ƒ nimittaį¹ƒ suggahitaį¹ƒ karoti, sÅ«padhāritaį¹ƒ upadhāreti, svāvatthitaį¹ƒ avatthāpeti.
He thoroughly apprehends, thoroughly bears in mind, thoroughly defines, that sign.
so taį¹ƒ nimittaį¹ƒ suggahitaį¹ƒ katvā upadhāretvā svāvatthitaį¹ƒ avatthāpetvā āsevati bhāveti bahulÄ«karoti.
Having thoroughly apprehended, thoroughly borne in mind, thoroughly defined, that sign, he repeats, develops and makes much of it.

Here someone gives attention [39] to the sign of blue-black internally in himself.
nÄ«lasaƱƱaį¹ƒ na paį¹­ilabhati;
He does not obtain perception of blue-black.
bahiddhā nÄ«lanimitte cittaį¹ƒ upasaį¹ƒharati,
He applies his cognizance to the sign of blue-black externally.
nÄ«lasaƱƱaį¹ƒ paį¹­ilabhati.
He obtains perception of blue-black.
so taį¹ƒ nimittaį¹ƒ suggahitaį¹ƒ karoti, sÅ«padhāritaį¹ƒ upadhāreti, svāvatthitaį¹ƒ avatthāpeti.
He thoroughly apprehends...

Thus he is percipient of an instance of materiality.

Such is the liberation described thus: Unpercipient of materiality inter nally, he sees instances of materiality externally.

♦ kathaį¹ƒ “subha”nteva adhimutto hotÄ«ti — vimokkho?
20. What is the liberation described thus: He is resolved upon only what is beautiful?
idha bhikkhu mettāsahagatena cetasā ekaį¹ƒ disaį¹ƒ pharitvā viharati, tathā dutiyaį¹ƒ, tathā tatiyaį¹ƒ, tathā catutthaį¹ƒ.
Here a bhikkhu dwells intent upon one quarter with his will endued with lovingkindness, likewise the second quarter, likewise the third quarter, likewise the fourth quarter;
iti uddhamadho tiriyaį¹ƒ sabbadhi sabbattatāya sabbāvantaį¹ƒ lokaį¹ƒ mettāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahaggatena appamāį¹‡ena averena abyāpajjena {abyāpajjhena (syā. )} pharitvā viharati.
so above and below and around; he dwells intent on the entire world everywhere and equally with his will endued with lovingkindness, abundant, exalted, measureless, free from affliction.
mettāya bhāvitattā sattā appaį¹­ikÅ«lā honti.
Because of the development of lovingkindness beings are unrepulsive.
karuį¹‡Äsahagatena cetasā .
He dwells intent upon one quarter with his will endued with compassion

Because of the development of compassion beings are unrepulsive.

He dwells intent upon one quarter with his will endued with equanimity

Because of the development of equanimity beings are unrepulsive.
evaį¹ƒ “subhaį¹ƒ” teva adhimutto hotÄ«ti — vimokkho.
Such is the liberation described thus: He is resolved upon only what is beautiful.

idha bhikkhu sabbaso rÅ«pasaƱƱānaį¹ƒ samatikkamā paį¹­ighasaƱƱānaį¹ƒ atthaį¹…gamā nānattasaƱƱānaį¹ƒ amanasikārā “ananto ākāso”ti ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ƒ upasampajja viharati — ayaį¹ƒ ākāsānaƱcāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho.
♦ katamo viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho?
idha bhikkhu sabbaso ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ƒ samatikkamma “anantaį¹ƒ viƱƱāį¹‡an”ti viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanaį¹ƒ upasampajja viharati — ayaį¹ƒ viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho.
♦ katamo ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho?
idha bhikkhu sabbaso viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanaį¹ƒ samatikkamma “natthi kiƱcÄ«”ti ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanaį¹ƒ upasampajja viharati — ayaį¹ƒ ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho .
♦ katamo nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho?
idha bhikkhu sabbaso ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanaį¹ƒ samatikkamma nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaį¹ƒ upasampajja viharati — ayaį¹ƒ nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanasamāpatti vimokkho.
♦ katamo saƱƱāvedayitanirodhasamāpatti vimokkho?
idha bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaį¹ƒ samatikkamma saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ƒ upasampajja viharati — ayaį¹ƒ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhasamāpatti vimokkho.
