SN 54.1 sixteen steps of breath meditation, in pāḷi, human English, AI English recordings.

each recording is about 3min. long.

I did the human recordings,
I can't tell the AI is not human.
It's also an exponentially better voice actor than I am,
infusing more emotion and nuance than I ever will.

SN 54.1 slightly abridged translation by frankk

(formatted for easy input into AI voice recording studio)
No essential Dhamma meditation points abridged,
just some of the repetitive structure of the sutta.
In fact some of the meditation points slightly expanded with
clarifying information from other suttas,
to make it airtight against heretical interpretations of breath meditation.

At Sāvatthī.

“Monks, when one Dharma is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. What one Dharma? Remembering and applying Dharma instructions on breathing. And how is rememberfulness of breathing developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and beneficial?

Here, monks, a monk has gone to the wilderness, or to a root of a tree, or to an empty dwelling. They sit down, bending into a cross-legged posture, straightening the body. They establish remembrance of Dharma in front, making Dharma their main focus. Always remembering and applying Dharma, he breathes in. Always mindful of and applying Dharma, he breathes out.

When breathing in long, or breathing out long, he lucidly discerns the difference.

When breathing in short, or breathing out short,  he lucidly discerns the difference.

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out sensitive to the entire physical body.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out pacifying bodily co-activities which underlie what we experience as a physical body.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out sensitive to mental joy.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out sensitive to physical pleasure.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out sensitive to mental co-activities which underlie what we experience as the mind.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out pacifying mental co-activities which underlie what we experience as the mind.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out sensitive to the mind.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out producing joy in the mind.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out making the mind undistractable and lucid.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out liberating the mind.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out continuously seeing impermanence.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out continuously seeing dispassion.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out continuously seeing cessation.”

They train themselves, thinking: “I will breathe in and breathe out continuously seeing relinquishment leading to nirvana.”

AN 9.36, MN 64, MN 111: How does Ajahn Brahm and Sujato's "Jhāna" work here?

What these 3 suttas have in common, AN 9.36, MN 64, MN 111, is the very interesting feature of explicitly describing doing vipassana, while one is in the jhāna and the first 3 formless attainments. LBT (late buddhist text) apologists, as well as Sujato, Brahm, claim that the suttas describe a jhāna where one enters a disembodied, frozen state, where vipassana is impossible until one emerges from that 'jhāna'.  Since Sujato translated all the suttas, let's take a look at what he translated, and how it supports his interpretation of 'jhāna'.  AN 9.36: Jhānasutta—Bhikkhu Sujato (suttacentral.net) ‘The first absorption is a basis for ending the defilements.’ ‘Paṭhamampāhaṁ,   bhikkhave,   jhānaṁ   nissāya   āsavānaṁ   khayaṁ   vadāmī’ti,   iti   kho   panetaṁ   vuttaṁ. Pāḷi and Sanskrit definition of Viveka

'Viveka', Sanskrit dictionary Primary meaning is ‘discrimination’. Other meanings:  (1) true knowledge,  (2) discretion,  (3) right judgement,  (4) the faculty of distinguishing and classifying things according to their real properties’. Wikipedia (sanskrit dictionary entry 'viveka') Viveka (Sanskrit: विवेक, romanized: viveka) is a Sanskrit and Pali term translated into English as discernment or discrimination.[1] According to Rao and Paranjpe, viveka can be explained more fully as: Sense of discrimination; wisdom; discrimination between the real and the unreal, between the self and the non-self, between the permanent and the impermanent; discriminative inquiry; right intuitive discrimination; ever present discrimination between the transient and the permanent.[2]: 348  The Vivekachudamani is an eighth-century Sanskrit poem in dialogue form that addresses the development of viveka. Within the Vedanta tradition, there is also a concept of vichara which is one t...
