Quiescent mode
Most people think of this when they read the standard four jhāna formula.
Dynamic mode of Jhāna
(Zen is japanese transliteration of Jhāna)
Depending on how energetically intensive your posture and activity is,
you won't be able to get 100% jhānic force compared to quiescent mode sitting,
but you can get 10-70% partial jhāna in all postures and activities,
with persistent training, practice and right view of jhāna according to EBT (early buddhism).
The Buddha repeatedly emphasized samādhi all the time, jhāna all the time,
but most people don't believe it because they've been taught wrong by popular teachers.
You'll never get the full potential of jhāna if you have a wrong and limited understanding
of jhāna being something you can only do with quiet and a sitting posture.
Worse, if you were taught only 1 in a million serious practitioners can attain the heretical redefined "jhāna" as a disembodied frozen stupor,
you'll never even make it out the starting gate because you assume you're not even qualified.
But if you do your research, look at the relevant suttas,
you'll find it a frequent theme that jhāna is to be done at all times, whether novice or expert, along with sati, samādhi, right view.
It doesn't mean you'll do jhāna well, but if you always practice you'll get better.
If you never practice because you've been taught it's not possible,
you've been cheated out of one of the greatest treasures the Buddha left for us.
Note: jhāna also means a fire burning.
jhāyati 1.2: pr. meditates; contemplates; lit. thinks [√jhā + ya + ti] ✔
jhāyati: pr. (+loc) burns; blazes (in) [√jhe + a + ti] ✔
Even though the 2nd meaning has a different root,
from suttas like SN 54.8 it's clear the buddha connects the simile of fire with role of jhāna meditaiton and flame going out in nirvana.
SN 47.4 sati ("mindfulness") done at the same time as 4 jhānas? Is this possible?
real jhāna in 24 sec. vid: the good, the bad, the ugly
