Sujato essentially redefines vāca (vocalized speech), as non-vocalized mental talk.
This is what happens when you redefine basic words in the Buddhist dictionary,
or any dictionary for that matter.
You have to start redefining a bunch of other basic fundamental concepts and terms to fit your warped version of "reality".

“The verbal process ceases first, then physical, then mental.”The verbal process ceases in the first absorption, the breath in the fourth absorption (SN 36.11:2.19), and feeling and perception in the attainment of cessation.

The verbal process is vitakka and vicāra,
and they cease in SECOND jhāna not first jhāna.
This is essentially Sujato having to redefine vāca (vocalized speech) as unvocalized mental talk to try to make sense of his incoherent fraudulent interpretation of jhāna.
Note he repeatedly ignores my private email and public post pointing out his error,
doubles down on the lie in his recent SN translation notes.
