more examples of dhamma-vicaya-sambojjhanga in sutta passages, in slightly disguised form

So what you want to notice is that consistently, throughout the EBT, Dhamma is referring to 'the Buddha's teaching' that leads to viraga...Nirvana.
The "Dhamma" in Dhamma-vicaya-sambojjhanga, is not referring to mental-objects, mental-qualities, at least not as the primary meaning.

Saddhābalaṃ vīriyañca,
“The powers are faith and energy,
hirī ottappiyaṃ balaṃ;
conscience and prudence,
Satibalaṃ samādhi ca,
rememberfulness and undistractible-lucidity,
paññā ve sattamaṃ balaṃ;
and wisdom as the seventh power.
Etehi balavā bhikkhu,
Empowered by these,
sukhaṃ jīvati paṇḍito.
an astute monk lives happily.
Yoniso vicine dhammaṃ,
They should investigate the Dhamma-[teaching] rationally,
paññā-yatthaṃ vipassati;
discerning the meaning with wisdom.
Pajjotasseva nibbānaṃ,
The liberation of their heart
vimokkho hoti cetaso”ti.
is like a lamp that does nirvana.”

(also notice vipassana, a close relative of 4sp Dhamma-anupassana)

AN 7.4 has the same verse as AN 7.3

48. Jetavanasutta
48. Jeta’s Grove
“Idañhi taṃ jetavanaṃ,
“This is indeed that Jeta’s Grove,
isisaṃghanisevitaṃ;
frequented by the Saṅgha of hermits,
Āvutthaṃ dhammarājena,
where the King of Dhamma stayed:
pītisañjananaṃ mama.
it brings me joy!
Kammaṃ vijjā ca dhammo ca,
Deeds, knowledge, and Dhamma-principle;
sīlaṃ jīvitamuttamaṃ;
ethical conduct, an excellent livelihood;
Etena maccā sujjhanti,
by these are mortals purified,
na gottena dhanena vā.
not by clan or wealth.
Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso,
That’s why an astute person,
sampassaṃ atthamattano;
seeing what’s good for themselves,
Yoniso vicine dhammaṃ,
would examine the teaching rationally,
evaṃ tattha visujjhati.
and thus be purified in it.
Sāriputtova paññāya,
Sāriputta has true wisdom,
sīlena upasamena ca;
ethics, and also peace.
Yopi pāraṅgato bhikkhu,
Any monk who has gone beyond
etāvaparamo siyā”ti.
can at best equal him.”
Notice how Dhamma is used in all those cases.
 It's Buddha-teaching, not "mental qualities".

20. Anāthapiṇḍikasutta
20. With Anāthapiṇḍika
Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Standing to one side, the god Anāthapiṇḍika recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:
“Idañhi taṃ jetavanaṃ,
“This is indeed that Jeta’s Grove,
isisaṅghanisevitaṃ;
frequented by the Saṅgha of hermits,
Āvutthaṃ dhammarājena,
where the King of Dhamma stayed:
pītisañjananaṃ mama.
it brings me joy!
Kammaṃ vijjā ca dhammo ca,
Deeds, knowledge, and Dhamma- principle;
sīlaṃ jīvitamuttamaṃ;
ethical conduct, an excellent livelihood;
Etena maccā sujjhanti,
by these are mortals purified,
na gottena dhanena vā.
not by clan or wealth.
Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso,
That’s why an astute person,
sampassaṃ atthamattano;
seeing what’s good for themselves,
Yoniso vicine dhammaṃ,
would examine the teaching rationally,
evaṃ tattha visujjhati.
and thus be purified in it.
Sāriputtova paññāya,
Sāriputta has true wisdom,
sīlena upasamena ca;
ethics, and also peace.
Yopi pāraṅgato bhikkhu,
Any monk who has gone beyond
etāvaparamo siyā”ti.
can at best equal him.”
Idamavoca anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto.
This is what the god Anāthapiṇḍika said.
Idaṃ vatvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi.
Then he bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right side, before vanishing right there.

Advice to younger meditators on jhāna, sex, porn, masturbation

Someone asked: Is porn considered harmful sexual.activity? I don't have a sex life because I don't have a partner and I don't wish to engage in casual sex so I use porn to quench the biological urge to orgasm. I can't see that's it's harmful because nobody is being forced into it. The actors are all paid well and claim to enjoy it etc. The only harm I can see is that it's so accessible these days on smart devices and so children may access it but I believe that this is the parents responsibility to not allow unsupervised use of devices etc. Views? Frankk response: In another thread, you asked about pleasant sensations and jhāna.  I'm guessing you're young, so here's some important advice you won't get from suttas   if you're serious about jhāna.  (since monastics are already celibate by rule)   If you want to attain stable and higher jhānas,   celibacy and noble silence to the best of your ability are the feedstock and prerequiste to tha...

SN 48.40 Ven. Thanissaro comments on Ven. Sunyo's analysis

This was Ven. Sunyo's analysis of SN 48.40: https://notesonthedhamma.blogspot.com/2024/05/exciting-news-honest-ebt-scholars-like.html And here is Ven. Thanissaro's response to that analysis: I think there’s a better way to tackle the issue of SN 48:40 than by appealing to the oldest layers of commentarial literature. That way is to point out that SN 48:40, as we have it, doesn’t pass the test in DN 16 for determining what’s genuine Dhamma and what’s not. There the standard is, not the authority of the person who’s claiming to report the Buddha’s teachings, but whether the teachings he’s reporting are actually in accordance with the principles of the Dhamma that you know. So the simple fact that those who have passed the Buddha’s teachings down to us say that a particular passage is what the Buddha actually taught is not sufficient grounds for accepting it. In the case of the jhānas—the point at issue here— we have to take as our guide the standard formula for the jhānas, a...
