“ariyaṃ vo, bhikkhave, aṭṭh-aṅgikaṃ maggaṃ

desessāmi vibhajissāmi.
| (I) will-teach (and) analyze. |
taṃ suṇātha, sādhukaṃ
| (to) this, listen thoroughly, |
manasi karotha;
| mind attentively; |

musāvādā veramaṇī,

samphappalāpā veramaṇī —
| Idle-chatter; abstaining (from it) |

Pāṇā-atipātā veramaṇī,

An-uppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ a-kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ
| Not-yet-arisen evil, un-skillful ☸Dhamma-[teachings]: |
An-uppādāya
| (let them remain) un-arisen! |
chandaṃ janeti
| desire (he) generates! |
vāyamati
| (he) endeavors! |
vīriyaṃ ārabhati
| Vigor & vitality (he) arouses! |
cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati,
| (the) mind (he) pushes, exerts! |
(2. Abandon)
uppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ a-kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ
| arisen evil, un-skillful ☸Dhamma-[teachings]: |
pahānāya

An-uppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ
| Not-yet-arisen skillful ☸Dhamma-[teachings]: |
uppādāya

| (he) endeavors! |
vīriyaṃ ārabhati
| Vigor & vitality (he) arouses! |
cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati,

(4. Protect)
uppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ
| arisen skillful ☸Dhamma-[teachings]: |
ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyo-bhāvāya
| maintenance, non-confusion, increase, |
vepullāya bhāvanāya pāri-pūriyā
| plenitude, development, & culmination |
chandaṃ janeti
| desire (he) generates! |
vāyamati
| (he) endeavors! |
vīriyaṃ ārabhati
| Vigor & vitality (he) arouses! |
cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati,
| (the) mind (he) pushes, exerts! |

kāye kāyā-(a)nu-passī viharati
| Body-as-body – continuous-seeing (he) abides-in, |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
| (he is) ardent 🏹, (a) lucid-discerner 👁, (a) rememberer 🐘, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-do-manassaṃ;
| vanquishing worldly avarice-(and)-distressed-mental-states. |
(2. vedanā-(a)nu-passī)
vedanāsu vedanā-(a)nu-passī viharati
| Experienced-sensations-(as)-experienced-sensations – continuous-seeing (he) abides-in |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
| (he is) ardent 🏹, (a) lucid-discerner 👁, (a) rememberer 🐘, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-do-manassaṃ;
| vanquishing worldly avarice-(and)-distressed-mental-states. |
(3. cittā-(a)nu-passī)
citte cittā-(a)nu-passī viharati
| Mind-as mind – continuous-seeing (he) abides-in, |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
| (he is) ardent 🏹, (a) lucid-discerner 👁, (a) rememberer 🐘, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-do-manassaṃ;
| vanquishing worldly avarice-(and)-distressed-mental-states. |
(4. ☸Dhammā-(a)nu-passī)
dhammesu dhammā-(a)nu-passī viharati
| ☸Dhamma-[teachings]-as-☸Dhamma – continuous-seeing (he) abides-in, |
ātāpī sampajāno satimā,
| (he is) ardent 🏹, (a) lucid-discerner 👁, (a) rememberer 🐘, |
vineyya loke abhijjhā-do-manassaṃ;
| vanquishing worldly avarice-(and)-distressed-mental-states. |
ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, sammā-sati.

| 😁🙂 withdrawal-born rapture-&-pleasure, |
🌘 paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.

Vitakka-vicārānaṃ vūpasamā
| (with) directed-thoughts-(and)-evaluation subsiding, |
ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ
| internal assurance, |
🌄 cetaso ekodi-bhāvaṃ
| 🌄 mind transcended-into-singularity, |
🚫(V&V💭) a-vitakkaṃ a-vicāraṃ
| 🚫(V&V💭) No-directed-Thought, no-evaluation, |
🌄😁🙂 samādhi-jaṃ pīti-sukhaṃ
| 🌄😁🙂 undistractable-lucidity—born rapture-&-pleasure, |
🌗 dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.
| 🌗 second Jhāna (he) enters, dwells. |

🚫😁 pītiyā ca virāgā
| 🚫😁(with) Rapture ** fading, |
👁 upekkhako ca viharati
| 👁 Equanimously-observing ** (he) dwells, |
(S&S🐘💭) sato ca sam-pajāno,
| (S&S🐘💭) (he is a) Rememberer, (a) lucid-discerner, |
🙂🚶 sukhañca kāyena paṭi-saṃ-vedeti,
| 🙂🚶 pleasure with-the-body (he) experiences, |
yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti —
| that those Noble-Ones declare - |
‘upekkhako satimā sukha-vihārī’ti
| “(He is an) equanimous-observer (and a) Rememberer, (he has) pleasurable-abiding.” |
🌖 tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.
| 🌖 third Jhāna (he) enters, dwells. |

sukhassa ca pahānā
| (with) Pleasure's ** abandoning, |
dukkhassa ca pahānā
| (with) pain's ** abandoning, |
pubbeva so-manassa-do-manassānaṃ atthaṅgamā

A-dukkham-a-sukhaṃ
| Neither-pain nor-pleasure |
👁🐘 Upekkhā-sati-pārisuddhiṃ
| 👁🐘 equanimous-observation-(and)-remembrance-purified, |
🌕 catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati
| 🌕 fourth Jhāna (he) enters, dwells. |
