Cinderella and the Revenge of the EBT

A long time ago, about 500 years after the Buddha entered nirvana without remainder...

The empire overthrew the EBT republic and redefined Jhāna.

They mostly reigned unchallenged for over a thousand years.

Circa 1983 CE, a false EBT arose...

claiming to be descendants of the original EBT republic.
But really they were just rebranding the empire's redefinition of Jhāna with a corrupt dictionary,
so that the EBT suttas could seemingly support the Empire's redefined "Jhāna".

According to Sujato, other than the wisdom chapters, not much difference between Vimuttimagga and Visuddhimagga

As of 2024 CE, a small contingent of genuine EBT rebels are fighting back

How does this epic saga end?

tune in and find out.

It takes an eco system of charismatic leaders,

powerful and influential enablers,

and hordes of influential trusting followers to keep the Empire running smoothly.

They all need to work together.

Wrong views do not get created and supported in a vacuum.

All it takes for wrong views to thrive and dominate,

is for good people of right view to say and do nothing.

However, don't count out the (genuine) EBT Rebel resistance

kamma-s-saka doesn't always work out as fast as you like,

and it doesn't always serve justice.

But sometimes, it can. Let's hope it does.

"Your days of promulgating a heretical system of jhāna are over, Punk!"

  1. love it 😂

there's also a new false EBT that arose (existential "dhamma", hillside hermitage), poisoning the minds of those unfortunate enough to fall into their trap

truly there is more counterfeit money now than real money

AN 9.36, MN 64, MN 111: How does Ajahn Brahm and Sujato's "Jhāna" work here?

What these 3 suttas have in common, AN 9.36, MN 64, MN 111, is the very interesting feature of explicitly describing doing vipassana, while one is in the jhāna and the first 3 formless attainments. LBT (late buddhist text) apologists, as well as Sujato, Brahm, claim that the suttas describe a jhāna where one enters a disembodied, frozen state, where vipassana is impossible until one emerges from that 'jhāna'.  Since Sujato translated all the suttas, let's take a look at what he translated, and how it supports his interpretation of 'jhāna'.  AN 9.36: Jhānasutta—Bhikkhu Sujato (suttacentral.net) ‘The first absorption is a basis for ending the defilements.’ ‘Paṭhamampāhaṁ,   bhikkhave,   jhānaṁ   nissāya   āsavānaṁ   khayaṁ   vadāmī’ti,   iti   kho   panetaṁ   vuttaṁ. Wikipedia (sanskrit dictionary entry 'viveka') Viveka (Sanskrit: विवेक, romanized: viveka) is a Sanskrit and Pali term translated into English as discernment or discrimination.[1] According to Rao and Paranjpe, viveka can be explained more fully as: Sense of discrimination; wisdom; discrimination between the real and the unreal, between the self and the non-self, between the permanent and the impermanent; discriminative inquiry; right intuitive discrimination; ever present discrimination between the transient and the permanent.[2]: 348  The Vivekachudamani is an eighth-century Sanskrit poem in dialogue form that addresses the development of viveka.
