Fugging mindfulness: After 1000 years, Austrian town changed their name, tired of mockery.
For most of the past 1000 years, the small town in Austria called 'Fucking', was pretty anonymous. But once the internet and social media ramped up, they were tirelessly harassed and mocked by tourists, visitors, cyber bullying, economic loss from too many tourists stealing the cool 'Fucking' road signs, etc. So starting 2021 new year, they officially changed the name of their town to 'Fugging'.
In the Buddhist world, it's time to stop using the word 'Mindfulness' and change it to something with a correct meaning.
Inspired by this development in Austria, I'm hoping that with good education and public awareness, we can make a mockery of the 'choiceless nonjudgmental awareness' = 'mindfulness' that has come to be the definition in today's world, and eventually force a change to a much better translation true to the meaning of sati 🐘, such as 'remembrance' or 'retention.'
