KN Iti all references to jhāna (7 references)


 ātāpīsuttaṃ (KN 4.34), with ardency and jhana, capable of nirvana. implies, without that, not capable.
paṭisallānasuttaṃ (KN 4.45) buddha describes himself as always trying to be in jhana, samadhi, linked to retreat/patisallana
sikkhānisaṃsasuttaṃ (KN 4.46) monks always should be in samadhi and jhana
 jāgariyasuttaṃ (KN 4.47), obtaining jhana necessary for nirvana
dhātusosaṃsandanasuttaṃ (KN 4.78), in verse, passing mention of noble ones in jhana

“yo ca satimā nipako jhāyī, ātāpī ottāpī ca appamatto.

§34. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: “Monks, a person without ardency, without compunction, is incapable of self-awakening, incapable of Unbinding, incapable of attaining the unsurpassed safety from bondage. A person ardent & compunctious is capable of self-awakening, capable of Unbinding, capable of attaining the unsurpassed safety from bondage.”
With no ardency, no

he’s incapable,
a monk like this,
♦ abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu, phuṭṭhuṃ sambodhimuttamaṃ.
of touching superlative
self-awakening.
“yo ca satimā nipako jhāyī, ātāpī ottāpī ca appamatto.
But whoever is mindful, masterful,
absorbed in jhāna,
♦ saṃyojanaṃ jātijarāya chetvā, idheva sambodhimanuttaraṃ phuse”ti.
ardent, concerned, & heedful,
cutting the fetter of birth & aging,
♦ ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. sattamaṃ.
touches right here
a self-awakening un-
surpassed.

♦ 45. vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ --
§45. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: “Monks, live enjoying aloofness, delighting in aloofness, inwardly committed to awareness-tranquility, not neglecting jhāna, endowed with clear-seeing insight, and frequenting empty buildings. As you live enjoying aloofness, delighting in aloofness, inwardly committed to awareness-tranquility, not neglecting jhāna, endowed with clear-seeing insight, and frequenting empty buildings, then one of two fruits can be expected: either gnosis right in the here-&-now, or–if there be any remnant of clinging-sustenance–non-return.”
Those with calm minds–
♦ “paṭisallānārāmā VAR, bhikkhave, viharatha paṭisallānaratā, ajjhattaṃ cetosamathamanuyuttā, anirākatajjhānā, vipassanāya samannāgatā, brūhetā suññāgārānaṃ . paṭisallānārāmānaṃ, bhikkhave, viharataṃ paṭisallānaratānaṃ ajjhattaṃ cetosamathamanuyuttānaṃ anirākatamajjhānānaṃ vipassanāya samannāgatānaṃ brūhetānaṃ suññāgārānaṃ dvinnaṃ phalānaṃ aññataraṃ phalaṃ pāṭikaṅkhaṃ — diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā”ti. etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca. tatthetaṃ iti vuccati —
masterful,
mindful,
♦ “ye santacittā nipakā, satimanto ca VAR jhāyino.
absorbed in jhāna–
clearly see Dhamma rightly,
♦ sammā dhammaṃ vipassanti, kāmesu anapekkhino.
not intent on sensual pleasures.
Delighting in heedfulness,
♦ “appamādaratā santā, pamāde bhayadassino.
calm,
seeing danger in heedlessness, they
♦ abhabbā parihānāya, nibbānasseva santike”ti.
–incapable of falling away–
are right in the presence of Unbinding.

§46. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: “Monks, live with the trainings [in heightened virtue, heightened mind, & heightened discernment] as your reward, with discernment uppermost, release the essence, & mindfulness the governing principle. As you live with the trainings as your reward, with discernment uppermost, release the essence, & mindfulness the governing principle, then one of two fruits can be expected: either gnosis right in the here-&-now, or–if there be any remnant of clinging-sustenance–non-return.”

not subject to falling away,1
one with discernment
♦ “paripuṇṇasikkhaṃ VAR apahānadhammaṃ, paññuttaraṃ jātikhayantadassiṃ.
uppermost,
seeing the stopping, the ending of birth:
♦ taṃ ve muniṃ antimadehadhāriṃ, mārañjahaṃ brūmi jarāya pāraguṃ.
that sage
bears his last body,
♦ “tasmā sadā jhānaratā samāhitā, ātāpino jātikhayantadassino.
has shaken off Māra, I tell you,
has gone beyond aging.
♦ māraṃ sasenaṃ abhibhuyya bhikkhavo, bhavatha jātimaraṇassa pāragā”ti.
So, always
delighting in jhāna,
♦ ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. navamaṃ.
centered,
ardent,
seeing the stopping, the ending of birth,
conquering Māra, along with his armies,2
monks,
be gone-beyond aging & death.

“tasmā have jāgariyaṃ bhajetha, ātāpī bhikkhu nipako jhānalābhī.
♦ 10. jāgariya-suttaṃ (KN 4.47)
♦ 47. vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ --
§47. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: “Monks, a monk should be wakeful: mindful, alert, centered, sensitive, clear, & calm. And there he should, at the appropriate times, see clearly into skillful mental qualities. For a monk who is wakeful–mindful, alert, centered, sensitive, clear, & calm, seeing clearly, at the appropriate times, into skillful mental qualities–one of two fruits can be expected: either gnosis right in the here-&-now, or–if there be any remnant of clinging-sustenance–non-return.”
Those who are wakeful, listen to this!
♦ “jāgaro cassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya sato sampajāno samāhito pamudito vippasanno ca tattha kālavipassī ca kusalesu dhammesu. jāgarassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viharato satassa sampajānassa samāhitassa pamuditassa vippasannassa tattha kālavipassino kusalesu dhammesu dvinnaṃ phalānaṃ aññataraṃ phalaṃ pāṭikaṅkhaṃ — diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā”ti. etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca. tatthetaṃ iti vuccati —
Those who are sleeping, wake up!
Wakefulness is better than sleep.
♦ “jāgarantā suṇāthetaṃ, ye suttā te pabujjhatha.
For those who are wakeful,
there’s no danger, no fear.
♦ suttā jāgaritaṃ seyyo, natthi jāgarato bhayaṃ.
Whoever is wakeful,
mindful, alert,
♦ “yo jāgaro ca satimā sampajāno, samāhito mudito vippasanno ca.
centered, sensitive,
calm, & clear,
♦ kālena so sammā dhammaṃ parivīmaṃsamāno, ekodibhūto vihane tamaṃ so.
rightly exploring the Dhamma
at appropriate times,
♦ “tasmā have jāgariyaṃ bhajetha, ātāpī bhikkhu nipako jhānalābhī.
he–on becoming unified–
could shatter the darkness.
♦ saṃyojanaṃ jātijarāya chetvā, idheva sambodhimanuttaraṃ phuse”ti.
So be devoted to wakefulness.
The ardent monk
♦ ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. dasamaṃ.
–masterful, acquiring jhāna,
cutting the fetter of birth & aging–
touches right here
a self-awakening un-
surpassed.

so does even one of right living

So avoid the lazy,
those with low persistence.
♦ “evaṃ kusītamāgamma, sādhujīvīpi sīdati.
Live with the noble ones–
secluded, resolute, absorbed in jhāna,
♦ tasmā taṃ parivajjeyya, kusītaṃ hīnavīriyaṃ.
their persistence constantly aroused
: the wise.

at the break-up of the body, after death, reappearing in a plane of deprivation, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.
♦ “diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave,
I have seen
sattā a-sakkārena abhibhūtā,
beings conquered by not receiving offerings–
Pariyādinna-cittā,
their minds overwhelmed–
kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapannā.
at the break-up of the body, after death, reappearing in a plane of deprivation, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.

(verse)

♦ “yassa sakkariya-mānassa,
when offerings (or respect) [are received],
a-sakkārena c’-ūbhayaṃ.
(when) no-offerings [are received], in-both [cases],
♦ samādhi na vikampati,
Undistractable-lucidity [does] not waver;
appamāda-vihārino .
(he is an) Assiduous-practitioner.
♦ “taṃ jhāyinaṃ sātatikaṃ,
that Jhāna (he is) continually [absorbed in],
sukhumaṃ diṭṭhi-vi-passakaṃ .
subtle (in) view-&-clear-seeing,
♦ upādānak-khay’-ā-rāmaṃ,
Clinging-destroyed;--abundantly-relishing (that),
āhu sap-puriso itī”ti.
(that is) called (a) man-of-integrity.
♦ ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā,
(this was spoken (by) the-blessed-one,)
iti me sutanti.

KN It, 4. catukkanipāto, 8. bahukārasuttaṃ (KN 4.107), para. 8
saddahānā arahataṃ, ariyapaññāya jhāyino.

dukkhassa antakiriyāyā”ti. etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca. tatthetaṃ iti vuccati —
in mutual dependence
both reach the true Dhamma:
♦ “sāgārā anagārā ca, ubho aññoññanissitā.
the unsurpassed safety from bondage.
From householders, the homeless
♦ ārādhayanti saddhammaṃ, yogakkhemaṃ anuttaraṃ.
receive requisites: robes, lodgings,
protection from inclemencies.
♦ “sāgāresu ca cīvaraṃ, paccayaṃ sayanāsanaṃ.
While in dependence on those well-gone,
home-loving householders
♦ anagārā paṭicchanti, parissayavinodanaṃ.
have conviction in Arahants
of noble discernment,
♦ “sugataṃ VAR pana nissāya, gahaṭṭhā gharamesino.
absorbed in jhāna.
Having practiced the Dhamma here–
♦ saddahānā arahataṃ, ariyapaññāya jhāyino.
the path leading to good destinations–
delighting in the deva world,
♦ “idha dhammaṃ caritvāna, maggaṃ sugatigāminaṃ.
they rejoice,
enjoying sensual pleasures.
♦ nandino devalokasmiṃ, modanti kāmakāmino”ti.
